Cape Town's gorgeous white sands

There's something about Cape Town— this photogenic South African city is like a favourite child in a large swaggering family, loved to death by tourists and South Africans alike. And this glittering city with a lifestyle unmatched anywhere in Africa is one of the most geographically isolated of the world's great metropolises.

Indeed the city by the bay seems to be perpetually on holiday — Cape Tonians are forever sipping wine at open-air cafes, swinging up to iconic Table Mountain in a cable car, listening to strolling musicians at the vibey Victoria and Albert Waterfront... And the ideal prelude to a South African itinerary is a heliflip over Cape Town prior to exploring the conventional sights.

There are a myriad fun things to do: revel in a wine tasting session in Groot Constantia, one of the oldest and most beautiful wine estates where wine making began in the country; hang out at Planet Champagne and Cocktail Bar at Mount Nelson Hotel with a pre-dinner champagne or cocktails; sample the sumptuous High Tea at Table Bay hotel; wind up at trendy Balducci's for a drink after a shopping spree at V& A Waterfront.

Shopaholics can also head for Greenmarket Square for bargains from across the African continent and to Stylish Cavendish Square and Tygervalley Shopping Centre. Canal Walk is Cape Town's biggest and busiest mall; Pan African Market in Long Street brims with trinkets and artefacts from across the continent.

On a spa trek in Cape Town you're spoilt for choice - the ones at The Vineyard Hotel, Cape Grace and Table Bay are outstanding. In the meantime, kids can have fun at Two Oceans Aquarium at the Waterfront; Ratanga Junction is a theme park with thrilling rides and a sense of fun. A 90-minute drive away is the picturesque town of Hermanus, which offers the best landbased whale watching. In the waters around Gansbaai village nearby, go shark cage diving or spy resident Bryde whales. The famous Southern Right Whales come a-calling between June and November.
