Hemkund Sahib, the sacred and most revered shrine ofSikhs is situated at an altitude of 4320mtrs along the banks of lake Hemkund. The sacred place is truly recognized as an abode of meditation for the GuruGobind Singh, the tenth and last of Sikh gurus to seek unification with theAlmighty. As per the Hindu mythological belief, Hemkund or Lokpal as popular bythis name also, is the place where Lakshmana, the younger brother of Rama, haddone his atonement.
It wasonly in the year 1930 that the soldier named Havildar Modan Singh from BengalSappers and Miners regiment accidentally came to know about this magnificentplace and could relate to the poem "BachittarNatak". A little later, Havildar Modan Singh along with Sant SohanSingh, belonging to Tehri Garhwal, and also a retired granthi from the IndianArmy laid the foundation of the foundation of present shrine in the year 1937.

HemkundSahib is a whopping and formidable 15 km walking from Govindghat. Theentire walking track en route to shrine goes through forests of pine andrhododendron, interspersed with blooming wild roses, ferns and alpine flowers. The last 5km of the walking path that leads to Hemkund Sahib is a steepincline. This steep climb begins from Ghangharia, the resting place beforetaking the track to Hemkund.

HemkundLake, which is around 2kms in circumference holds crystal clear waters in herambit and presents a beautiful semblance of 5500mtrs. high Saptashringa Peaksthat surround the shrine. You can find along the shores of the Hemkunt lakestones covered with mosses and flowers, which are just about to bloom. The bestseason to travel to Hemkund Sahib is between July and October. The holy shrineis all covered with snow in the November, December, January and February.
