About Us

The band mainly plays Latin music in languages such as Portuguese, Spanish & French along with popular music in Konkani and English. Belinda Fernandes - Vocals, Guitar & Flute, Mukesh Ghatwal - Keyboards & Bass, Franky Lopes - Lead Guitar, Munna Chari on Percussions.

Belinda Fernandes’ music career began in the beautiful state of Goa, India, at a very young age. It was at a tender age that she learned the piano, the guitar and the flute from her illustrious brother Remo Fernandes.

As a child it was a rare performance that she mustered mainly during family reunions and get-togethers.

As a student she concentrated more on her studies although music still remained her passion. Her first major achievement was earning a Ph.D in French* after having studied at Bombay University and the Sorbonne in Paris.

During this time she indulged in her passion in a very private manner by writing and composing her own songs and putting her favorite French poems to music.

After her mother’s death she started* partying to overcome* her grief and was often asked to sing a few songs whenever there was a live band playing. With the confidence gained from these impromptu performances she overcame her stage fright and was now ready for the big stage.

It was at the insistence of her friends, help from her brother Remo and support from her husband Carmelino Machado that she decided to form her own band “Belinda & The Tropicanos”. The band mainly plays Latin music in languages such as Portuguese, Spanish and French along with popular music in Konkani and English. They have been invited to play at numerous functions happening all over India and abroad. Undoubtedly, Belinda is one of the most complete and established artists in India of Latin music.

The next step after the formation of the band was the release of her first album “Festa Tropicana” with some of her own compositions.

Her Idol of course is her brother and she’s been inspired by Brazilian greats such as Carmen Miranda, Marisa Monte, Daniela Mercury, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil to name a few.

Belinda and The Tropicanos intend to release a couple of albums shortly which will have a lot more of her very own unreleased compositions.

Besides Western Music, Belinda is a keen exponent as well as choreographer of Kathak. Having been trained in this North Indian Dance form for many years, she composed and performed a Kathak Fusion Dance to “Barco Negro” by Amalia Rodrigues. With her knowledge of Carnatic Vocal, she plans to compose and induce an Indian flavor into Latin music in the near future.
