A Tourism Australia delegation is meeting Chinese airlines, investors and government officials this week as it aims to increase the number of visitors entering Australia each year.China is now considered Australia's second-largest source of inbound tourists, behind New Zealand, with nearly 670,000 visitors each year. A taskforce set the target three years ago, with the aim of attracting 900,000 Chinese tourists by 2020 -- an objective likely to be eclipsed in the next few years.Tourism Australia managing director Andrew McEvoy said China had been the fastest growing international market and Australia should aim to capitalise on the expansion.
"One of the big themes that came out of the Tourism 2020 taskforce when the target was set was that the Western markets are still very important for Australia but the growth in the future is going to come out of the East," Mr McEvoy said.Digital Pass $1 for first 28 Days"In that case, for us, China is first among equals."We have seen some very rapid growth come out of China already. We probably will see nearly 700,000 will have come to Australia by the end of the last financial year."
Chinese tourists are the highest spending international visitors to Australia, outlaying more than $4.5 billion a year or $7000 each.It is estimated that one million Chinese visitors would be worth about $10bn a year. The official tourism statistics do not count Chinese students who stay in Australia for more than a year. The delegation this week signed a three-year memorandum of understanding with Air China to increase the number of flights into Australia.Air China operates the only direct flight between Beijing and Sydney.

However, he said the duplication of regulation between local, state and federal governments should be removed to help encourage more investment. If there is an issue, and this is for everyone, not just Chinese investors, it is that people are still surprised by the regulations and the hoops they have to jump through if they want to make an investment," he said.Chinese investors have become more active in the Australian tourism market with the purchase of the Palazzo Versace hotel on the Gold Coast and Lindeman Island in far north Queensland last year.
