Different people have different recreational pursuits and these can be varied, depending on their interests, availability of time and financial resources.  I love to travel and see places, study people, their customs and cultures and learn the history of the place and taste the local cuisine.  I am a traveler, who spends bare minimum and tries to get or extract the maximum.  In short, when I am alone, I prefer to eat at simple restaurants and use public transport or depend on the walker's express.I prefer to study whatever material that is available on a tourist destination and when I arrive there, I check into a hotel and having done that, set out early in the mornings to travel all over and see and study the destination, as much as I can.  I prefer to travel light and be active by avoiding heavy and fancy meals, alcohol and other things that would hamper my movements and make me lethargic.

Amongst the places that I have visited in India, there are certain places that I have visited more than once and the erstwhile Portuguese Colony, namely Goa, which the Portuguese called Estado da India when they reigned over it, is one of my favorite destinations.  There are many reasons why Goa keeps on beckoning me: may be its friendly people, beautiful beaches, its ever warm and balmy weather, churches, temples, many curios and gifts that one can purchase there for near and dear ones and friends.Recently, I had been to Goa and visited Mangesh and Shanta Durga temples, Bom Jesus Church and the Cathedral at Old Goa, Calangute, Colva and Miramar beaches, Donna Paula Bay and other places too.  I stayed at a beautiful resort with a swimming pool and other amenities that included sumptuous breakfast too.  The flight from Bombay to Goa takes 48 minutes and during the morning flight, the aircraft is ready to land by the time the passengers have had their breakfast.

The Goa's State Government needs to be complimented for developing the State into a much sought out destination by both Indian and foreign tourists.  From the languages spoken by these tourists, I could pick out Russians, Germans, Americans, British and others.  I presume Goa earns or rakes in a lot of money through tourism, export of cashew nuts and Feni- the State's popular alcohol brewed both from cashews and coconuts. On the minus side, the roads in Goa are narrow and need to be developed as top quality, wide roads.  Further, the taxis and private transport should operate on meter system and the public transport should ply on all the tourist destinations, so that tourists and public can use it and avoid private operators, who are fleecing or ripping the tourists.  Many Indian States should study Goa and try to improve their territories to attract hordes of tourists and generate good revenue for their development and prosperity.

Old Goa has developed a lot and has transformed into a bustling town compared to a sleepy village it was when I had first seen it in November 1986.  Today, the streets are having heavy traffic, the place is busier and much more populated and new buildings and commercial ventures can be seen around. Bom Jesus Church and the Cathedral are heritage sites.  At Bom Jesus Church, I saw the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier that are kept in the casket.  The body has been kept quite high and the amazing thing is that one cannot get clear snapshots of the Saint's body, irrespective of how good and sensitive is the camera.  I have tried to take the snaps of the Saint's body many times in the past and during my recent visit to Goa, I have taken snaps with an excellent camera with 20 times zoom and 20.1 mega pixels, but the photos are blurred.
Mangesh temple is located at the ancestral village of the Indian melody queen, Lata Mangeshwar and then I visited the Shanta Durga temple, many families were coming there to pray to the Almighty for favours and then going away after making their offerings.Calangute beach has become highly commercialized with many restaurants and resorts having mushroomed on its beaches.  Moreover, at nights, tables and chairs are kept on the beaches, with a single candle lit on every table.  Probably, this attracts couples who have romantic hearts and who want to spend quiet, quality time all by themselves.  I also visited Colva, Baga and other beaches and found them to be commercialized.  At Colva beach there is paragliding, boating and other facilities too.  At Bagha beach, I had a good facial and foot massage, which, years ago, I would not have dared do at Bombay's Chowpatty.

The Portuguese house across the road from the museum is quite an excellent place and shows the lifestyles they led in Goa during the days of yore.  One can see from the same that the life in Goa those days was far different from what it is today.  In short, these Portuguese lived in rural settings, though they led lives of affluence and luxury, with hordes of servants at their beck and call to take care of their needs. To conclude, my trip to Goa was quite an enjoyable one and I consider it to be a destination worth visiting to anyone who has plenty of money to splurge around and even those who wish to undertake a trip with a limited or tight budget.  It all depends, how good is one in juggling with money.
In a way, it is sad to leave India and return to work.  Sad, because I miss the greenery of India and various interesting things of day-to-day life there, which we do not see in this part of the world.  I am happy to return to Bahrain and keep myself busy with work.  Further, I feel happy when my superiors, colleagues and other staff welcome me back and enquire about my trip home, how I spent my holidays and various other things.  I feel happy when people make me feel wanted and say that they missed my absence, humour and banter.
