Bangkok's treasure trove of attractions includes the majestic Grand Palace and Wat Phru Kaeo, or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha., the Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn, Wat Pho or the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, and the Wat Benchamabophit or the Marble Temple. The pagoda-style architecture stands in sharp contrast to the city's modern structures. The Safari World and Marine Park, and the amusement park near the Don Muang Airport are popular amongst tourists. The Samutprakan Crocodile Farm, the Samphran Elephant Ground and the floating markets are located on the periphery of the city, and make for some wholesome entertainment. The capital is strategically situated in the central plains, and offers easy access to all the destinations you may wish to cover. 86 kms north of Bangkok, is the historic city of Ayyuthaya. Standing tall and majestic, its ruins speak of the grandeur of the Khmer and Sukhothai regimes. The headless Buddha figurines are a sad reminder of the destruction brought about by the Burmese invaders in 1767. The Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Historical Park, as it is formally known has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and surely worth the trip.

Before you head for Thailand's golden sands, take time off to visit Chiang Mai, 800 kms north of Bangkok, steeped in Buddhist history and proudly preserving its unique identity. The land with more than 1,100 temples, Chiang Mai is distinct from the rest of Thailand, holding on to its architecture, cuisine, language, dance form and costume. The Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Phra Sing and Wat Chiang Man are some of the temples not to be missed.
Shopaholics can find good bargains for souvenirs and handicrafts at the Night Bazar on Chang Khlan Road and the Bo Sang Umbrella Village.

Driving 80 km south eastward from Bangkok, the plains open up to the glorious beaches of Chon Buri, where you can also visit the Ayutthaya-styled WaiYai Intharam temple dedicated to Lord Buddha. Pattaya, Thailand's most well-known destination is along the bay, barely 150 kms from the capital city. Life in Pattaya changed after the American soldiers discovered this little paradise during the Vietnam War in 1961. The fishing vessels gave way to tourist boats, and now, Pattaya boasts of every conceivable luxury and entertainment a tourist could ask for. From riding elephants to mini bikes and motorcycles, to surfing and deep sea fishing, or from shooting firearms to golfing, Pattaya has it all! And of course, the ubiquitous night clubs, spas, massage parlours, and round-the clock shopping! No wonder then, that it receives 5 million tourists every year!Rayong and Trat, with lonely beaches and unspoilt coral reefs on the eastern coast are gaining popularity amongst tourists seeking solitude and privacy.

Rivaling Pattaya in tourist inflow is Phuket Island, off Thailand's southern provinces, approximately 860 kms from Bangkok. As your aircraft swoops to land at the Phuket International Airport, you will see nature is at its bounteous best, with the shimmering white beaches separating the green hills from the clear blue of the Andaman Sea. Phuket has matured from a trading site to a charming tourist destination, sporting the ultimate in recreation and comfort. Hat Mai Khao, Hat Nai Yang and the Hat Putong are some of the frequented beaches. The Hat Nai Yang offers snorkeling, and is part of the Sirinat National Park. The Phuket Fantasea is a theme and amusement park sprawled over 140 acres that can fill your day with games and activities, shopping, and a peek into Thai culture.

You can visit the Thai village on Thep Krasattri Road for an exotic Thai meal and shop for handicrafts. The myth and aura of the half-buried Buddha image at the Wat Phra Thong temple draws curious visitors, so do keep it high on your itinerary. And before you retire to your hotel, drop by at the Laem Phromthep for a view of the setting sun.
Phang-nga, famous for the James Bond Island, s in Southern Thailand are visual treats too, their marine attractions competing with the fascinating lush and hilly landscapes for attention. While in Bangkok, make the most of the exotic Thai cuisine, guaranteed to tickle the palate of every gourmand! Thailand also makes for a great shopping destination - malls, flea markets, hawkers, tribal and handicraft villages - you're sure to find great bargains wherever you go! Overall, there's something about Thailand's compelling scenic beauty, its culture and hospitality that makes it the most visited country in Southeast Asia.
