About Dharamshala

Dharamsala, popularly known as the ‘Queen of the Hills’, is divided into lower and upper towns. Dharamsala is known for its scenic beauty, calmness and serenity. It has high pine trees, tea gardens and timber yielding trees. Dharamsala is now the seat of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama.

After the Chinese conquest of his country, Dharamsala is evocative of the imperial days in places like Mcleod Ganj and Forsythe Ganj. Dharamsala is the headquarters of the Kangra district.

Places of Interest

Bhagsunag Falls :- (11 km. from Dharamshala) At a distance of 11kms. from Lower Dharamshala, Bhagsunag can be approached by road, here an old temple, a fresh water spring and restaurant are located. Further about 2kms. is beautiful Bhagsunag water falls which sooths one's eyes.

St. John’s Church :- (8 km. from Dharamshala) It is the charming dressed-stone church of St. John in the Wilderness. Under the shade of deodar branches, a memorial has been erected over the body of the British Viceroy, Lord Elgin who died at Dharamsala in 1863. There is a well tended old graveyard on these grassy sloped.

Triund :- (17 km from Dharamshala) Triund lies at the feet of the perpetually snow clad Dhauladhar at the height of 2975 m . The snow line starts at ilaqa, 5kms. from Triund. It is a popular picnic and trekking spot. Ropeway is being installed from Dharamshala to this place.

War Memorial :- This memorial is built near the entry point to Dharamshala to commemorate the memory of those who fought valiantly for the defence of the motherland.

Mcleod Ganj :-  A number of tibetan settlements with religious education and other rehabilitation centres mushroomed all over the Mcleadganj. As Dharamshala became the headquarter of the Tibetan Government in exile, headed by Dalai Lama, it gained prominence all over the world and prominent personalities started arriving here. Mcleadganj emerged as a major Buddhist centre.

Dharamkot :- (14 km. from Dharamshala) It is situated on the crest of a hill, this favourite picnic spot affords a panoramic view of the kangra valley and the Dhauladhar ranges. One can reach Dharamkot by a simple trek from Bhagsu. Various small restaurant type of shops are situated in the path for a quick relaxation and bevarages.

Kunal Pathari Temple :- (3 km from Dharamshala) ( Kotwali Bazar ). A level walk from Kotwali Bazar leads upto the rock temple of the local goddess. Temple is related to a legend dating back to centuries. Located near the beautiful tea gardens, Kunal Pathari Temple offers good view of the Dhauladhar Range. Because of high altitude, Kunal Pathari area greets the visitors with refreshing winds.

Gyuto Monastery :- (6km from Dharamsala) Gyuto Monastery is a popular pilgrim site and the abode of Karmapa (the head of the Karma Kagyu, a major school of Tibetan Buddhism). Often called as TCV School, the monastery houses the majestic image of Sakyamuni Buddha enshrined in a small chamber.

The gompa was built to commemorate the Tibetan soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of Tibet. Buses to Gyuto Monastery from Dharamsala are available from the main bus stop. Besides, taxis can be hired too
